Plant-based meat is now in North American fast food restaurants

As Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods have gained in popularity, they have started making their way in the menu of major fast-food chains.

Plant-based meat is now in more than 40,000 locations across the US and Canada, including grocery stores and restaurants. For your culinary pleasure, we’ve gathered a list of fast foods that have recently started to offer meatless meat to their customers. Bon appétit.

1 Burger King (US and Canada)

Burger King teamed up with Impossible Foods to offer the Impossible Whopper, a burger that is allegedly tasting exactly like its meaty counterpart, the whopper. The burger is available on both sides of the border.

2 A&W (Canada)

A&W was the first fast-food restaurant in Canada to offer Beyond Meat burgers. The adventure was successful enough that other restaurants soon followed. When it comes to plant-based meat, you can now get a Beyond Meat burger, an English Muffin Beyond Meat Sausage & Egger or, for a vegan option, a Beyond Meat Sausage & Veggie.

5 McDonald’s

While McDonald’s is not yet offering a vegan burger in North America, it is coming soon for sure. The chain has been testing its vegan burgers in Germany (the Big Vegan Burger TS) and in Scandinavia (McVegan burger). Impossible Foods has also teamed up with McDonald’s main supplier of meat, which means a plant-based burger is probably in the makes for us too in North America.

6 TGI Fridays (US)

TGI Fridays now offers a Beyond Meat Cheeseburger that will sit in your stomach with 890 calories, which is surprisingly more than its regular cheeseburger, at 780 calories.

7 White Castle (US)

White Castle was among the first fast-food chains in the US to offer plant-based burgers. The Impossible Slider is now available in most White Castle restaurants across the country. They should be joined soon enough by the BBQ Impossible Sliderwhich is being tested in selected locations for the time being.

Your favourite Canadian fast food has joined the trend, now offering a wide range of plant-based options: the Beyond Burger, the BBQ Beyond Burgerthe Beyond Sausage Egg & Cheese, the Beyond Sausage Farmer’s Wrap and finally the Beyond Sausage Lettuce Tomato, which is the only vegan option of the batch. Not bad, eh?

10 Harvey’s (Canada)

Unlike its competitors, Harvey’s is not teaming up with Impossible Foods or Beyond Meat for its plant-based burger, but rather with Maple Leaf’s Lightlife brand. You can now get the Lightlife plant-based burger in all Harvey’s locations across Canada.

11 Subway (US and Canada)

Subway is currently testing the Beyond Meatball Marinara sub in over 600 locations across the US and in Nova Scotia, in Canada—why only in Nova Scotia though? Anyway, hopefully the test run will be successful and we’ll have a plant-based option everywhere in both countries in the foreseeable future.

12 KFC (US and Canada)

Yes, this is real: KFC has partnered with Beyond Meat to offer the KFC Beyond Fried Chicken, which completed its test run successfully in Atlanta. We’re talking about an American national launch in 2019, while Canadians should have a limited release by the end of the year and a national launch in 2020. Fingers crossed!
